A hierarchical roundup of some recent Catholic news:
– A Minnesota teen was effectively denied the sacrament of confirmation because of his support for samesex marriage. (The family says he was denied, the pastor says he voluntarily withdrew, but the pastor’s letter makes it clear that he would have been denied even if he hadn’t withdrawn.)
– Longtime Maryknoll priest and social justice advocate Roy Bourgeois has been excommunicated, laicized, and dismissed from his order because of his support for and active participation in “the invalid ordination of a woman.”
– Kansas City bishop Robert Finn, convicted in September of a misdemeanor count “for not telling police that one of his priests, Fr. Shawn Ratigan, had taken hundreds of lewd images of children in Catholic schools and parishes” is still the bishop of Kansas City, and no fraternal correction from his brother bishops of the USCCB has been forthcoming.
– The Vatican wants visiting priests and bishops to wear cassocks when visiting Rome.
Gracious God, we pray for your holy catholic church.
Fill it with your truth;
Keep it in your peace.
Where it is corrupt, reform it.
Where it is in error, correct it.
Where it is right, defend it.
Where it is in want, provide for it.
Where it is divided, reunite it;
for the sake of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.
