Fifty Years Ago Today…

The Second Vatican Council was convened by Pope John XXIII in October, 1962. There are all kinds of anniversary retrospectives in the Catholic media and even some in the general media — I heard a bit of a story on NPR this morning. But this is a particularly interesting and engaging resource.

At Conciliaria, you can see news about the Council as it was reported, 50 years ago today. For context, some material from the secular news is also provided. (Apparently it was announced that Johnny Carson would take over as host of the Tonight Show the same week that the Council opened. Who knew?) And “special guest correspondents [will] step into a time machine to report on the dramatic events as though they were there 50 years ago.” How neat!

Many, many thanks to the Conciliaria team, and to their partners at America, Commonweal, and the USCCB for this creative resource.
